Optimisation gets more from your Website!
Case Study:
We were approached by a tutoring agency based in Lymington who had a site which looked good but
generated very few enquiries. They noticed that it was not appearing in Search Engine searches against appropriate keywords such as
'tutors Lymington' and asked if Northerwood could improve its performance.
When we looked at the site it was immediately obvious that the it was not being
found at all by some of the Search Engines, and performed poorly on others.
We looked at the keywords people used to search for this kind of service and rewrote the content of their homepage to reflect this. We then altered the hidden site tags to match this and registered the site with the Search Engines. About six weeks later the site was ranking at no 7 on the first page of Google searches and no 5 on Yahoo seaches. All the entries above it belonged to directories or national agencies who were clearly investing massive amounts in online promotion - proof that in some cases with a modest investment a site can be made to compete with the biggest players.
There's a lot more to a website than how it looks. Of course that first impression is very important, so your site has to look good, but what if most people never even get to your site because it isn't on the first page of a Google Search? Search Engine Optimisation - or website optimisation as it is often known - aims to improve the performance of a website in online searches.
Optimisation is a quite separate process to creating a site. You can create a great looking site that has a lousy search ranking. Whilst it is best to think about optimisation while a site is being built, we can apply it to an existing site, provided that you have access to maintain the content of that site.
There are quite a few different aspects to optimising a site, but it starts with analysing what kind of search terms people may use to look for your type of business. We then look at how much competition there is for those terms, and also use some sophisticated analysis to search for similar terms that may give better results. We then ensure that these terms appear in the right way in the text on your pages and in the hidden 'metatags' behind your pages.
We might also advise on some appropriate directories to get your site listed in, and if necessary we can advise on boosting your position in the rankings with a Google adwords campaign where you pay for clicks through from an enhanced position in the search page.
